Shiva Day #1-7
The loss of a loved one is amongst the most difficult events anyone can experience. While it may sometimes seem too difficult to bear, the ancient traditions of Jewish mourning provide a comforting embrace to those experiencing such a loss. When words are insufficient, the beauty and comfort of tradition can see us through.
A Jewish mourner is called an Aveil. Of course, family and friends will also experience the pain of loss, but an Aveil is classified as a first-degree relative. According to Jewish tradition, this includes those who experience the loss of a parent, spouse, child, or sibling. Traditionally, the full obligations of Jewish mourning - and Shiva - are only required of these mourners.
Shiva is amongst the best known Jewish mourning practices. The word Shiva, stems from the Hebrew word Sheva. Sheva is the Hebrew word for seven. As its name suggests, the Shiva is an intense, seven-day mourning period. During this time the mourner stays at home (only visiting the Shiva house) and is visited by family and friends who come to console those in need.
There are many practices particular to Shiva. Please view the following short video we have prepared in order to gain a better understanding of this ancient and beautiful practice.
