Sophia "Lita" Friedberg Marishak

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sophia Belita "Lita" Friedberg Marishak, who left this world on October 21, 2025, at the age of 80. A devoted mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, Lita was a constant in the lives of those who knew her. Born on June 25, 1945, into an intellectually spirited, Jewish home. She was the daughter of Hannah "Nan" Zipnick Friedberg and Lionel Samuel Friedberg of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Lita’s life was marked by her dedication to her family and community. She moved to Dallas in 1978 and considered Dallas her home since that time. She worked for over 40 years as a system analyst, highlighting her intelligence and work ethic. Her passion for education was evident in her two-decade role as a Hebrew School Teacher, touching the lives of many young people. She spent several years as a math tutor and sewing teacher, generously sharing her knowledge and skills. Most recently, she worked as a movie theater attendant at Cinemark Plano West and a Religious School teacher at Temple Emanu-El. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Lita brought joy to her community as an active member of organizations including the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), the NCJW Singers, the Shearith Israel Choir, and the Yarn Yentas. Lita is survived by her loving daughter, Sherry Marishak Simon, her caring sister Maris Friedberg Cutting and husband Burton Gil Cutting of Millsboro, Delaware, and her cherished grandchildren: Liane Simone Friedberg of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Cooper Evan Simon and fiancé Veronica France of Dallas, Texas, Hannah Zara Simon of Dallas, Texas, and Avery Erin Simon of Dallas, Texas. She is deeply cherished and remembered by many. Lita was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Yvette Rose "Dee Dee," Friedberg; her grandson, Andrew Lee Friedberg; her brother, Malcom Paul Friedberg; and her son-in law, Rick Simon. Her family finds solace in knowing that she is now reunited with their loved ones. In celebration of Lita’s life, a Graveside Burial Service will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Shearith Israel Memorial Park, located at 4634 Dolphin Road, Dallas, TX 75223. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a remarkable woman whose intellect and talents enriched the lives of so many. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations made in Lita’s name to the Shearith Israel Choir, Temple Emanu-El Religious School, Jewish Children’s Regional Service in New Orleans, Jewish Family Service of Dallas, and Dallas Cat Rescue at catmatchers.org. Such contributions will honor her giving and loving spirit for the Jewish community and the love of her cats. Lita Marishak leaves behind a legacy of commitment, compassion, and community service that will be admired by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
