Robert D. Sasso, MD, FACS The life of Dr. Robert D. Sasso will be honored on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., Congregation Beth Israel Memorial Garden-Proler Chapel, located at 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, Texas. Robert was born in Panama City, Panamá on July 30, 1939. He was preceded in death by his wife Diane S. Gelfand Sasso, his parents, Donald and Margarita C. Sasso, and his sister Linda S. Vega. He is survived by his sister Irma S. Major (Wesley Major), several nieces and nephews and his first wife, Irene D. Sasso, mother of his three beautiful daughters: Lynette S. Twedt (Tyler Twedt), Carol S. Cox, and Sandra S. Kyle. He has three grandchildren: Andrew T. Kyle (Beatrice N. Kyle), Dylan C. Kyle, and Mark A. Cox (Selene N. Cox). Robert received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 and his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1964 from the Universidad de Panamá, Republic of Panamá. He moved to Houston, Texas, in 1966 and completed his residency in General Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital (SJH) in 1967. He became a US citizen in 1971. He called Houston home and was a member of Beth Israel Congregation. While active at SJH (1971-2002), he worked as an ER physician, a Surgical Instructor in the Surgical Training laboratory as well as a teacher and mentor. He was active in several committees at SJH and was appointed as Chief of General Surgery Section and the Chairman of Medical Records and Accreditation Committee. He served on the Medical Staff Executive Committee, Credentials Committee and Retired Physicians Organization, to name a few. During his tenure at SJH, he was also credentialed with Park Plaza Hospital, Memorial City Hospital, and West Houston Surgicare. Upon his retirement in 2002, he was awarded the prestigious Emeritus status at St. Joseph Hospital. Robert had a passion for the fine arts. He was a season subscriber of the Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony Society for the Performing Arts, the Houston Ballet, and the Alley Theater among others. During his retirement he volunteered at the Museum of Fine Arts. Robert will be remembered as a wonderful and loyal father, husband, physician, and friend. He was a kind and caring person who used his talents to serve the Houston Community. His canine companions throughout the years were dear to him. He will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association or the Museum of Fine Arts – Houston.
