Richard Levy

Irving Richard Levy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully in the early hours of September 29, 2025, at Faith Presbyterian Hospice in Dallas, Texas, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 66. Richard was born on April 19, 1959, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Joseph and Paula Block Levy. At the age of seven, his family relocated to Dallas. He graduated from Skyline High School Social Sciences Magnet in 1977. A natural leader, he served as class president, was a National Merit Scholar, and interned with the Talented & Gifted program. He went on to graduate cum laude from Yale University in 1981, where he was awarded the prestigious Gordon Cup for character, personality and leadership from Timothy Dwight College. Richard earned his J.D. with honors in 1986 from the University of Texas School of Law, where he also served as a legal writing and research teaching assistant. Richard built a distinguished career in business bankruptcy law, practicing with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher between 1986 and 1998. At that time he worked on some of the largest bankruptcy cases in Dallas and the Southwest. After this period he spent several years building his own boutique law practice, and in 2019 changed careers to his other passion of teaching psychology, sociology, government and economics at Berkner, High School in Richardson, TX. He was beloved and respected by his students. Outside of his career, Richard was deeply involved at Temple Emanu-El, where he taught in the religious school, chaired the Religious School Committee, and served on the Board of Directors. While his sons were young he served as Cub Scout Master for Pack 1077. A lifelong learner and creator, he wrote two adolescent fiction novels, was a passionate reader of history, and enjoyed hands-on renovation projects. Throughout his life he was an avid golfer, achieving a lifelong dream when he scored a hole-in-one in 2020. Above all, Richard cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathryn Hasson Levy; his children, Steven and Liz Levy, Daniel and Tori Levy, Simone Levy, and Dena Levy; and his grandchildren, Grant, Alana, Amelia, and Greer Levy. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, sense of humor, and the deep love and care he gave to those closest to him. Funeral services will be held at Temple Emanu-El, with interment to follow at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery in Dallas.
