Miriam Cyprus

Miriam Cyprus, 78, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2019 in Houston, TX. She was born on June 30, 1941 in Seattle, Washington to the late Madelyn and Leo Walkow. Miriam and her twin sister, Rebecca, were raised in Texarkana, TX. She attended the University of Oklahoma where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education. Miriam taught kindergarten in Denver, Houston, and Colorado Springs for many enjoyable years and was loved by her students. This could be readily felt when she walked into the lunchroom: her former students would scream her name in excited joy. Miriam was married to Jerry Cyprus. After moving to Houston, they had two children, Sharon and David. They all had many great years together, going on family vacations to Colorado and enjoying each other's company. Miriam was a devoted, caring mother who put her career on hold to stay home and raise her children during their formative years. She always encouraged a strong sense of ethics, love of nature, regard for the environment, and treating others with respect and love. In addition to her immediate family, Miriam treasured being with her sister Rebecca, brother-in-law Joe Ruskin, and her nieces, Dee Anna and Marcy. She also enjoyed the company of close friends, whom she stayed in contact with throughout her life. Her sister Rebecca was her best friend. In addition to their daily mischief, they celebrated many wonderful holidays, birthdays, and vacations together. They also loved to entertain, antique and bargain-hunt, and go on walks and vacation together. Later in her life Miriam spent many years with her significant other, Joe Orell. They enjoyed gardening, hiking, cooking, and traveling together.Miriam also cherished spending time with her grandchildren Ari and Rachel; and great nieces and nephew Madeline, Lainey, Macy and Davis. Every moment and memory she made with them brought her such happiness. Miriam was ahead of her time with respect to nutrition, healthy food, and environmental concerns. She was passionate about education, politics, and social justice, equality. Miriam was also a very spiritual person who loved nature, hiking, entertaining, music, arts, dancing, collecting and appreciating art and antiques, being with her friends and family. She was a beautiful person inside and out and always strived to help make the world a better place. She had a kindness, generosity of spirit, and magnetism that brought a smile and joy to everyone with whom she connected. Miriam was unfortunately sick for the last several years of her life. Her passing leaves her family heartbroken. They will always keep her memory alive by remembering her strength, kindness, beauty, huge heart, and love of life.
