Michael Nathan Carsch

Michael Nathan Carsch, 67, of Reno, Nevada died in his home on July 30, 2019 after a short battle with Glioblastoma cancer. Michael was born in Houston, Texas and graduated from Bellaire High School in 1969. He received his BBA in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin in 1973. Michael was the son of the late Barbara Nathan Carsch and Kurt Carsch of Houston. Growing up, The Carsch Family were members of Congregation Emanu El of Houston. Michael is survived by his wife, Deborah Brown Carsch, whom he was married for 33 years. They have one daughter, Emily R. Carsch, who is soon to reside in San Francisco, CA. Michael is also survived by his sister, Walia Karin Dungan, her husband George Dungan of Newton, MA. , and Michael's brother, Randy P. Carsch of Fairview, TX. Michael's nieces and nephews include Marissa Dungan, Lillianna Carsch, and Poul and Kurtis Carsch. Upon graduation from UT, Michael joined the Peace Corps where he worked in Brazil for three years. He learned and continued to speak Portuguese fluently until his passing. Michael began his professional career in the hospitality industry in Hotel Management. He spent 20 years with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company where he was General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, FL, The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner, VA and The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne, FL. Michael was later the General Manager of Thompson Hotels in Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Chicago. He was President of The Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV where he and Deborah returned to retire in 2016. Michael was responsible for bringing The Concours d'Elegance to Amelia Island, FL. He was actively involved in various Chambers of Commerce Where he served as President while in Amelia Island, Florida. He was a member and chaired tourist development boards in various cities. He was involved and served on the board of directors for his Reno home owners' community. Michael mentored as a big brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in Reno. Michael enjoyed following the market and politics. He prized both fine wine and Scotch whiskey. He started a Scotch Club in his Reno community in order to promote awareness of the single-malt. He was a proud USC and Duke fan as these were his daughter's undergraduate and graduate schools. Michael loved being with his two golden retrievers, hiking, snowshoeing, playing water volleyball and pickle ball. He and Deborah traveled quite extensively in Europe, and cruised Australia, New Zealand and just recently Alaska. Michael was a mentor and friend who was loved by many. He connected and cared deeply for people. Michael gave so many people confidence and a start in their careers. In lieu of flowers, donations can please be made in Michael Carsch's memory to Glioblastoma Research at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
