Dorothy Swann

Dorothy Slotnick Swann, 68, passed on Wednesday night, March 23rd 2016. She is survived by her husband William Fox Swann, son Jonathan Adrian Swann, daughter Jessica Wesley Swann, brother Samuel Slotnick, and sister-in-law Elena Swann. Dorothy was born in Manhattan on May 31st, 1947 to William Miller Slotnick and Edith Slotnick (nee. Finkelstein). She graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1965, and obtained her Bachelor's in Psychology from Arizona State University and MSW from NYU in 1972. She practiced social work and psychotherapy, and directed the adolescent day treatment programs at West Oaks Treatment Center and DePelchin Children's Center in Houston, TX. After spending much time in and out of hospitals, she began studying alternative medicine, receiving her Level 1 Reiki certification in 1996 and her Ayurvedic certification in 2000. Her passion for health led her to found Meals-In-Balance, an Ayurvedic food preparation company devoted to providing clients a balanced diet and meal plan. Of all these achievements, her proudest was her family, to whom she gave roots and wings. It's hard to describe the presence Dorothy had in this world, known and loved for her enthusiasm for peer-counseling, passion for social work and interests in health, politics and the arts. She had an acute love for traveling in her younger years, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. She learned to live for the moment and not fear for the future. Not only did Dottie walk uphill and against the wind, she danced and sang and taught and nourished. Her life achievements were numerous and she had a keen ability to uplift, comfort and motivate. She touched people as a supporter, teacher, life-lover, mentor, mother, partner, and listener. She was, and continues to be, a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity, a true warrior and believer in the power of love. Her physical presence will be greatly missed, but her spirit will remain as a guide for us all.
