Dr. Xico Baruch Garcia

Dr. Xico Roberto Baruch Garcia, a dedicated physician, a beloved family member and friend, passed away on December 28, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. He served all who knew him with compassion, integrity, and a kind heart. He cast a spiritual light on his life’s paths so those traveling with him would not stumble. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1956 to Dr. and Mrs. Xicotencatl P. Garcia, and as an adult assumed an important role in his father’s family of illustrious physicians. As his mother’s son, he contributed his many other talents to her family of well-respected pharmacists, the De Leons. He adored both families and was strongly loved by them. He is survived by his older sister, Yolette, with whom he was extremely close. They always did things together, sharing stories and adventures, all the while making each other howl with laughter. They were each other’s protectors in life. The biggest influence on him, however, was moving to Mexico City as a child when his father decided to attend medical school there and brought along the family. A new, astonishingly beautiful world opened for Xico Roberto with the move, and he learned everything Mexico City offered: language, beauty, art, sophistication, indigenous cultures, and the influential mark of the Spanish conquest. He drank it all in with help of his classmates at Colegio Columbia, where his mother taught, and with relatives, especially the family of Adela and Guillermo Vela. After returning to the U.S., he finished his secondary studies, attended college at the University of Dallas, where he formed lifelong friendships and deepened his critical thinking skills. From there, on to medical school at UNT’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, acquiring the best education and more fine friends. He was prepared and ready to contribute. He loved medicine and was an excellent doctor. His medical practice focused on veterans. He always said that veterans truly needed the best care, and he was one of the doctors to do just that. Perhaps one of the boldest steps he took in life was to move from Catholicism to Judaism. He made the decision after looking into the ancestral research his aunt, Dr. Clotilde Garcia, had conducted with her sister, Dr. Dalia Garcia. They were able to trace and chronicle the ancestral family departure from Spain to the Americas. What they learned is that these ancestors were Sephardic Jews. They left during the Inquisition to colonize what is now known as Mexico and Texas. This knowledge inspired him to study Judaism in 2013 and covert. He became a member of Congregation El Binah and later, Temple Emanu-El. At Emanu-El he participated with the Brotherhood and became one of its presidents for a term. He also focused his participation on the Jewish War Veterans group, and the Jewish Federation. As one of his best friends sums up, “He appreciated his rich heritage, his family’s contributions to the American story, his faith journey and where it led him.” He also was a meticulous thinker, an enthusiastic participant, and loved the wondrous human spirit. He never gave up.
