Steven Sherman

It is with heavy hearts that we lost our beloved husband, father, Bapo (grandfather), uncle and friend to so many. He passed away on September 20, 2018 surrounded by his devoted family. Steve was born on December 19, 1947 to Peggy and Manny Sherman in Houston, Texas. He attended all neighborhood schools, graduating from Westbury High School, and also attended Stephen F. Austin State University, where he majored in business. Steve was proud to be a native Houstonian. When he was younger, he was active in B'nai Brith Chapter 136 in which he held many offices and attended conventions. Later on, he loved being a member of the B'nai Brith bowling team for nearly 30 years as well as playing baseball and basketball at the JCC. He enjoyed taking his family to places where he grew up around town and telling them stories of his younger-self shenanigans. Steve was a sports enthusiast. He had knowledge of the players, knew various statistics and other impressive trivia. He loved to attend baseball, basketball, football and hockey games wearing his favorite team's jersey. Steve had a great sense of humor and never minded being called by his infamous nicknames of 'Tank' and 'Worm'. He could carry a joke to the punchline in such a believable fashion his audience always thought he was telling a true tale. He loved playing pranks but only in good fun. Even though Steve was lighthearted he took his dedication to volunteering very seriously going to Seven Acres, area synagogues or wherever anyone needed or asked him for help. He also regularly volunteered at Congregation Emanu El in the PTO with his wife Fannie as well as serving numerous years at the Purim Carnival as the ticket booth attendee and volunteering from Mitzvah Day's inception. Even when he was in a wheelchair he still showed up to make sandwiches for others and BBQing in the rain. He also really enjoyed being a part of the Holy Cow Cookers BBQ team. Steve was the consummate salesman. He sold jewelry for many years on a wholesale and retail basis on the road but constant traveling just got too hard. Turning his passion for sales and love for our community, he began working at the Jewish Herald-Voice and earned 'Top Sales' a number of times during his nearly 20 years there. He loved his customers and working alongside his daughter Melanie, who started working at the JHV in high school. Steve loved music even though he couldn't carry a tune. He and Fannie would go out with their friends to concerts, dancing along with the bands. He loved The Beach Boys and attended many of their concerts. Steve was deeply dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America organization earning his Eagle Scout at 14 years old. He was Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 806 and Troop 1190 of which was re-organized from Troop 190 where he initially belonged at Emanu El. He enjoyed mentoring the scouts and always encouraged them to continue on until earning Eagle Scout and not be afraid of the daddy long legs when camping. He was extremely proud when his sons, Brad and Greg, earned their Eagle Scout and daughter, Melanie, earned her Girl Scout, Ofer award. Most of all, he was a warm and generous husband of 46 years to Fannie, never questioning her decisions regarding his health. He was always her rock when she needed strength. Together they built a home and had three beautiful children inside and out. Steve supported Brad, Greg and Melanie in all of their activities and fundraisers, oftentimes acting as soccer and baseball coach. He loved his daughters-in-law Iris and Riana and son-in-law Peter just like his own. His beautiful grandchildren Joshua, Ellie, Evan, Gavin and Jillian were his precious jewels. He enjoyed playing cards, checkers and other games with them, talking sports and just loved being their Bapo. Steve leaves behind his loving wife, Fannie, his children Brad and Iris, Greg and Riana and Melanie and Peter Plocharski. His sister Denise and brother-in-law Richard Avant, his nephew Cole Avant, his sister-in-law Rozelle Teplitsky, grandchildren Joshua, Ellie, Evan, Gavin and Jillian as well as numerous beloved cousins and friends. A special Thank You to Dr. Brett Solomon, Dr. S. Youssef and Dr. Caleb Chen for never giving up on Steve.
