Leo Speckman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Leo Speckman on November 24, 2024 at the age of 90. He was a devoted husband, proud father and loving grandfather, and a cherished friend to many. Leo was married to his wife Tamara, who he loved more than anything in the world for almost 57 years. He is survived by his two children, Moy Speckman (Lisa) of Plano, Texas and Dafna Tarlowe (Michael) of Seattle, Washington, and his four grandchildren: Adam and Ryan Speckman and Samantha and Erica Tarlowe. Leo was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings. Leo was born in Mexico City on June 21,1934, and was a child of immigrants from Eastern Europe. He grew up in a humble household and worked hard to accomplish lofty hopes and dreams. Through focus and determination, he was the first in his family to receive a college degree. In his younger years, he was an active man who loved calisthenics, playing basketball, tennis and bowling. Using his Architectural degree, his career spanned many years designing and constructing homes and high-rise buildings that still stand today. Leo also had an extreme passion for and love of art. He was an avid artist who experimented with various techniques and explored many fields of expression. He met Tamara at Mexico’s Jewish Community Center (CDI) in 1965. They married after a two-year courtship. In 1983, they moved to San Antonio, Texas to pursue new opportunities and to be closer to family. In 2004, they moved to Plano to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Leo made friends wherever he went. His smile was contagious and lit up a room. He used his sense of humor to bring joy to others. He taught his children to love family, have strong ethics, to be honest, and to value their Jewish traditions. The family is eternally thankful for the care, support, and friendship of his healthcare team, Dr. Sander Gothard and Dr. David Rawitscher. He loved and admired both of them for their compassionate care over the years. We will always cherish our memories of Leo (Papi, Gordito, Zayde) and will be forever grateful for the time we had with him. A graveside service will be held at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery in Dallas, Texas on November 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with Rabbi Andrew Paley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas.
