DR. JOSEPH SEGEL Houston, TX and formerly of Johannesburg, South Africa July 23, 1930 ~July 17, 2016 Dr. Segel was known to his friends as Joe. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, son of the late Rachel and Israel Segel. He is preceded in death by two older brothers and a younger sister. He attended Athlone Boys High School and University of Witwatersrand Medical School where he was an excellent student, graduating at the top of his class. Dr. Segel practiced as a physician for 50 years; beginning in Johannesburg, and continuing in Houston, Texas after his relocation in 1977 with his longtime friend and partner, Dr. Leslie Nowitz. Their practice specialized in Family Medicine, and Dr. Segel was a licensed sex therapist. He was a people person who cared deeply about his patients and was passionate about their care. He stood out as a mentor to medical students who did rotations in his office, learning from him how to frame questions and more importantly, learning to listen to the answers. He never limited his time with patients, even as medical practice became more controlled. He ran a family practice in the true sense of the word, caring for multiple generations of many families who adored him and missed him when he retired. Dr. Segel continued to share his knowledge and passion for patient care while he was a resident at Seven Acres: many of the staff commented on how much they learned how to treat and speak to people from Dr. Segel. Personally, Dr. Segel was passionate about learning and art. He was a docent at the Houston Holocaust Museum. He enjoyed attending lectures about art and world affairs and in his retirement enjoyed painting. Of all of his accomplishments, Dr. Segel was most proud of his family. He was a loving husband, a caring sibling, a compassionate father, step-father, father-in- law, an attentive uncle, and a proud grandfather. He is survived by Adele, his loving wife of 30 years; his daughter Beverley and husband Dave Roe and their daughters Brielle and Emily, daughter Jennifer Segel, son Martin Segel and wife Amy and their children Danielle and Jake; stepdaughter Elise and husband Marc Passy and Avi, Adina and Yael, and stepson Ed and wife Cimin Cohen. He is also survived by his brother, and sister-in- law, Dr. Nathan and Esme Segel, and sister-in- law, Mary Segel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Seven Acres and his personal care givers - Vivian, Martha, Alicia and Doug, whose love and care were priceless.
