Janet Unger

Janet Unger passed away January 20, 2016 after a blessed 101 years. Born in New Jersey, she moved with her family to Houston in 1952 when her husband Allen was transferred to open the new office for the Prudential Insurance Company. She spent the next 64 years taking care of her family and loved being with their many friends. She was always the first to offer help and support to anyone who needed it. Janet loved being a part of the Afton Oaks Garden Club, the Elva A Wright Auxiliary and when Allen had Parkinson's, they both made major contributions to the Parkinson Foundation of Harris County for over 10 years. Her most important accomplishment was being a wonderful example for her children, Gary (wife Betsey) & Joan (husband Billy), her 4 grandchildren & 13 great grandchildren. Of course her first thoughts were always of her husband Allen. Her family brought her such joy as they shared their love. Janet loved to hear a good joke and had a wonderful, contagious laugh. Janet's other lifelong love was painting. For many years, she painted with friends at the JCC. Her canvases were her great pride. Janet never sold her paintings, rather chose to enter exhibitions and share her "treasures" with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 younger sisters and brother but always stayed close with her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, her nieces and nephews and appreciated their love and support. When Janet was 100, she finally decided to move to assisted living at the Plaza at the Buckingham. Even at 100, with severe arthritis in her hands, she took art lessons there and painted her first water colors. November, 2015, she celebrated her 101st birthday there with 101 cupcakes shared with all. She would want to thank all the Plaza staff for their true kindness and thank all the new friends she made for caring about her and making the days fun.
