Jack Bernard Mazow

Jack Bernard Mazow passed away September 4, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Julia Wolf Mazow; children Claire Mazow Gelfman of San Diego; son Leo Mazow of Richmond, Virginia; and son Joshua Mazow of Las Vegas; son-in-law Gary Gelfman and daughter-in-law Michele Lunn Mazow; and grandchildren Tamara Mazow Gelfman, Frank Evan Gelfman, and Frank Asa Walls Mazow. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Tillie Mazow of blessed memory, and his sister Edith Beychok of blessed memory. Jack was born January 10, 1925, in Houston. He attended Rice University and graduated from University of Texas School of Medicine. He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Puerto Rico. He had a residency at Lincoln Hospital (now the Albert Einstein School of Medicine) in the Bronx, later followed by a fellowship in allergy and immunology at Buffalo General Hospital. Upon his return to Houston, he set up his medical practice, operating out of the Medical Towers Building and then Scurlock Tower, where generations of patients received world-class healthcare. He was on the clinical and teaching faculty of University of Texas Health Science Center and Baylor College of Medicine, where he was awarded as an outstanding clinical professor. He received the Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology in 1996. An accomplished violinist and a lifelong devotee of classical music, he was very active in the early years of Chamber Music Houston (previously Houston Friends of Music), of which he later served as president, secretary and program chair. He found immeasurable pleasure playing violin in quartets and for family and friends. He was truly a renaissance man and was adept at many endeavors--a ham radio operator, an amateur astronomer, an oil painter, and a world traveler, he loved poetry, and could (and often did) quote long passages of Shakespeare. Nothing, however, brought him more joy than his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and his innumerable dear friends.
