Dr. Henry "Hershel" Melvin Shanoff, MD, B.Sc., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.C., 90 years young, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 21, 2016. His parents, the late Toba Lee and Charles Samuel Shanoff, recorded in the family bible that he was born on August 30, 1928, in Lodz, Poland although when he moved as a young child to Toronto, Canada, August 23, 1928 was recorded as his birthdate. He happily celebrated both birthdays his entire life. He is preceded in death by his parents, his eldest brother David Shenhav, Lynn Shanoff Romberg, his adoring in-laws, Jake and Annie Sperling and loving brother-in-law Bernie Novack. He is survived by his devoted, and caring wife of 62 years, Miriam Sperling Shanoff. Children, Cary Shanoff and Kristin Conlon, Toba and Sol Reifer, Linda and Ephram Chaplick, Debbie and Stephen Lapin, Jonah Shanoff and Rena Etkin and Suzanne Shanoff. Loving and proud Zaidie and grandpa to Samantha Shanoff and Jesse Covington, Jake Conlon Shanoff, Alana and Alec Reifer, Amy and Sarah Chaplick, Hannah, Jake and Emma Lapin, Dani and Laurel Etkin-Spigelman. He is also survived by his loving sister Diane "Dina" Novack and multiple cousins, nieces, nephews and his lifelong friends "the gang." Hershel attended Harbord Collegiate and served in the Second Battalion COTC, (1944). He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School (1948), and received his B.Sc. in Medicine, University of Toronto (1952), all with distinct honors. He received his specialty in Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians Canada (1955) and Fellowships from The American College of Angiology (1958), The American College of Cardiology (1959), and The American Heart Association (1966), and was a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. He published several articles including in the American Journal of Cardiology and studied with J. Alick Little under the guidance of Charles H. Best. Next to his family, his greatest love was being a doctor and he was passionate about learning, teaching, lecturing and the science of medicine. Hershel never met a stranger and always welcomed people into his home. Before there was Google there was Henry Shanoff, who looked up every fact and word in his beloved dictionary and encyclopedias. Hershel continued researching on his ipad and working on the daily crossword puzzle until his last days. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
