Gloria Rubenstein

Gloria was born in Buffalo, New York on May 6, 1922 to parents Louis and Mollie Keller. She embodied the strong values and Jewish faith of her parents and two siblings. She loved being Jewish and all it entailed. Gloria married Samuel Rubenstein in New York in 1944. They had two children there, Howard and Larry. The rapidly growing Rubenstein family moved to Laredo, Texas in 1953. It was a good move because of a strong and growing Jewish community. Gloria fit in immediately and was loved by all throughout the Laredo Jewish community. Gloria and Sam had a third son, Richard, in 1950. She used to say; "These are My Three Sons." Gloria was a fantastic Jewish cook. She was known far and wide for her cooking abilities and desire to always be available to cook for Bar Mitzvahs, confirmations and other Jewish community activities and affairs. Her house was always a favorite place for her children's friends to be invited over to for lunch. She loved to cook, eat and see others enjoy eating her good meals and "treats." Gloria, her husband and sons lived a good, happy, healthy and safe life in Laredo. It was a great place to raise a family, and Gloria was a great mother and wife. Gloria and Sam lived in Laredo until 1974 when they moved to Houston to address Sam's failing health. Sam died in 1978. The last words he uttered before he died were to Gloria. He said: "I love you." Gloria stayed in Houston after Sam died. She wanted to be close to, and spend time with, her son Larry and his daughters Jessica and Melissa. She loved them all very much, and they spent many happy times together. She also championed the causes of the mentally ill and hard of hearing during her spare time in Houston. Gloria loved children and was so excited when Jessica had her two boys, Alex and Sam and Melissa had a daughter, Adrienne. She was a proud grandmother and great-grandmother. During these happy times, Gloria always prioritized things in her life. Her son Howard was very ill for many years, and she was always there to help and support him in any way she could. He needed her, and she was always going to be there for him; which she was until his death late last year. She was already quite ill at the time of his death and knew she would not be "long for this world" after that. Gloria passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Home in Houston at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Sam, son Howard, parents Louis and Mollie, and her siblings Kate Keller Sterman and Stuart Keller. She is survived by sons Larry and Rick, nieces Janet Sterman, Lisa Sterman and Susan Yeager, grand-daughters Jessica Rubenstein Morse and Melissa Rubenstein, great-grandchildren Adrienne Rubenstein, Alex and Sam Hunter, and many other loving relatives. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, Gloria's family would appreciate donations to the Volunteer Services Council at Kerrville State Hospital for "Howard's Lunch Bunch" or a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice.
