Evelyn Finkelstein

Evelyn Sheinberg Finkelstein, 94, was born on June 6, 1922 in Houston, Texas to Max and Leona Melcer Sheinberg . Evelyn is survived by her children, Mark and Marlene Finkelstein, Larry Finkelstein and Anna Billingsley, Lynette Borrel and Steven Smith. 11 grandchildren - Desiree Finkelstein and Brandon Phillips, Lauren Finkelstein, Amy and Adam Mincberg, Michael and Mariel Borrel, Melissa and Danny Gutman and Melanie and Joseph Lipp. Two great grandchildren, Charlie Mincberg and Savanna Phillips. She is also survived by her brothers Haskell Sheinberg and Ed Sheinberg and his wife, Pauline; sister in law, Sophie Finkelstein as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Evelyn is preceded in death 1 year ago, by her beloved husband, Nathan , 1 month shy of their 72nd wedding anniversary. Nathans parents, Marx and Rose Finkelstein, her parents Max and Leona Sheinberg, brother Morris Sheinberg and brother in law, Kaplan Finkelstein. Evelyn married the love of her life on October 15th, 1944, and within 2 days Nathan was off to Japan as a member of the US Army fighting on the front lines in WWII. During this time she worked as the assistant to the head of the US Forestry service. Nathan returned 2 years later and they immediately began to start their life together. Evelyn and Nathan were proud founding, lifetime members of Congregation Emanu El. She loved sharing birthdays, holidays and special occasions with her family. Family was everything to her! Evelyn and Nathan loved to travel at every possible opportunity throughout their marriage and especially loved to gamble ANYWHERE there was a slot machine. If you asked her, she never lost. Evelyn loved the Arts and spent many years supporting and attending local museums and special opening events. She was the Head Drum Majorette in the Scottish Brigade Band at San Jacinto High School. To this day, her original set of drum sticks are kept as a cherished family heirloom. She also loved dancing! All kinds of dancing! Over the years she participated in numerous local, national and international ballroom dancing competitions. For 60 years, Evelyn was an avid collector of Matchbook covers; thousands and thousands and thousands of matchbooks covers from all over the world. This led her 60 year affiliation with the Lonestar Matchbook Society where she served as President and Treasurer. Evelyn was greatly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed!
