Dahlia Edelstein Gabert

Dahlia Edelstein Gabert, beloved wife, mother and grandmother was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on July 6, 1928. She passed away peacefully after a lengthy and challenging illness on April 8, 2018. Dahlia was surrounded by her loving daughters at the time of her passing. She will be greatly missed by Nori and Daryl and her adored grandchildren Heath and Amy. Dahlia was a graduate of Penn State University and a devoted Nittany Lion. As a college graduation gift from her parents, Reba and George Edelstein, Dahlia received a summer trip to visit her aunt in Houston. A blind date was arranged with a handsome young man, M.B. Goldberg. It is said that magic happened that night. They both knew they had found their beshert. They were blessed with two baby girls and a new home. However, tragedy was to happen that forever changed Dahlia's life. While visiting her parents back East with her daughters, Dahlia received a phone call that informed her that her beloved husband had been killed in a fire that destroyed their home. That same year, Dahlia's mother died. Losing these two loved ones while so young forever changed her life. For over 60 years Dahlia missed her husband and mother and was devoted to keeping their memory alive. Their memory continues to live on in her daughters and grandchildren. Several years later, Dahlia met and married L.M. Gabert who adored her and raised her two girls as his own. They celebrated 60 years together and were proud members of Congregation Emanu El. Dahlia's favorite holiday was Passover and was famous for her chocolate and sponge cakes, matzo ball soup and brisket. Dahlia was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Edelstein whom she adored. She has many nieces and nephews throughout the country who she always enjoyed visiting. Dahlia loved to travel and never missed an opportunity to accompany her daughter Nori on business trips or spend time in Santa Barbara with her "eldest". She came for every game, performance, mitzvah or special event of her grandchildren. Those who knew Dahlia would say she was a natural born shopper and taught her daughters and granddaughter well. No destination was too far away to discover a new St. John department, bakery or coffee house.
