Charles Wachsberg

Charles Chaim Wachsberg, 96, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2016, at his home in Houston, Texas. He was born in 1919 as the eldest of four children to Shimon and Gittle Wachsberg in Chrzanow, Poland. Although his parents and many family members perished in the Holocaust, Charles, his younger brothers David and Sol, and his younger sister Ann, all miraculously survived the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. Following the war, Charles lived in Germany and worked for the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps. Before emigrating to the United States, he met and married the love of his life, Anne. They first settled in Pittsburgh, PA, where Charles worked as a general contractor and painter and Anne worked as an accountant. They later moved to Miami Beach, Florida, where Charles and Anne became prominent members of the community. In 1997, Charles and a few others together formed the City of Sunny Isles Beach. He painted the official city logo that is now found hanging in City Hall, adorning government structures and used as the official patch on police uniforms. This was one of Charles' most proud accomplishments. Charles also served as the President of Winston Towers Condominium for over 25 years. The City Commission proclaimed February 16, 2006, as "Charles Wachsberg Day" in the City of Sunny Isles Beach in honor of his dedication to the City and its citizens. Charles and Anne moved to Houston in 2010 to be close to family. After a 62-year love affair, Anne unfortunately passed away in 2011. Charles was a prolific painter of beautiful landscapes, mountains and flowers. He loved to bake, go on cruises with Anne and his family in Houston, and enjoyed playing the slot machines at the casino. His appreciation of art, storytelling, Yiddish expressions, and edgy humor will be missed and remembered by his loving family and friends. Special recognition goes to the closest caregivers and family members who made extraordinary efforts to enhance his life during his final years and months, including Flora Wachsberg, Steve Wachsberg, Simon Wachsberg, Ginny Wolnowitz (and her precious son Julian), Dr. Edward Berzin (and his beautiful children Benji, Isabelle, Jackie and Sammie), Dr. Alan Hananel, and Almaz Ghirmay. Charles was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Anne, and his brother, David Wachsberg. He is survived by his brother Sol Wachsberg and wife Flora, sister Ann Blum, and nephews, nieces, close friends and their families who will all greatly miss this very special person. The funeral will be held on Monday, November 21, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery at Post Oak, located at 1037 N Post Oak Rd, Houston, TX 77055.
